Metacognition is a higher cognitive System 2 function.

Metacognition simply means thinking about your thinking and is the perquisite for all other mind tools.

Think about that for a moment.

It’s the conscious spotlight that lets you catch System 1 in action, interrupt it, and redirect your thinking toward more thoughtful, rational, intentional choices.

It’s about using your conscious awareness to observe and objectively evaluate your automatic thinking patterns and mental processes.

Automatic programs run our lives and most often we have no idea how they got there.

If you don’t “police” and guide your thinking, these automatic “patterns of your past” will pilot the direction of your life.

We judge, we make decisions and we see life through the lens of old outdated and faulty thinking and beliefs.

We become prone to propaganda, tribalism and rigid thinking.

Through metacognition we look for not only the mechanics of lower brain habits like snap judgments and automatic lazy thoughts but also the content of those thoughts so they can be scrutinized and discarded or “rewritten” if needed.
